Enclosure Breather Vents

CHSO breather vents, also called venting plugs, allow air exchange between an enclosure and its surroundings to help balance pressure changes. Choose PA66 plastic, 304 stainless steel or nickel-plated brass using the separate specification tables below.

These components fit a dedicated enclosure opening. They do not carry or clamp a cable. Match the thread and pitch, required airflow, wall thickness and available space before ordering.

How a Breather Vent Works

Temperature changes can create a pressure difference between the inside and outside of a housing. A breathable membrane lets air pass to help equalize that pressure while limiting water and dust ingress. It can help reduce condensation risk, but it is not an active cooling device and does not guarantee a dry enclosure.

Air passes through the breathable membrane as pressure changes. Water and dust resistance depends on the selected vent and its installation.

Breather Vent Specifications by Material

PA66 Plastic Breather Vents

Body: PA66. Colours: black and white-grey. These standalone vents allow air exchange through a waterproof breathable membrane to help balance enclosure pressure. They do not provide cable entry or cable strain relief.

M32 × 1.5 ≥ 8000 15 25 32 45
M40 × 1.5 ≥ 8500 15 24 40 56

Airflow values above are per vent at a differential pressure of 70 mbar (7 kPa); this is a test condition, not a working-pressure rating. The two M12 × 1.5 versions have different overall and wrench dimensions. Specify both dimensions when ordering.

Plastic series technical data: temperature range −40°C to +150°C; hydrostatic resistance >100 mbar for 30 minutes; moisture vapour transmission 5000 g/m²/24 h. The stated membrane air permeability is 1.2 L/min/cm² at 70 mbar and is separate from the per-vent airflow listed above. Request applicable test conditions and the selected model drawing for project approval.

304 Stainless Steel Breather Vents

Natural-finish 304 stainless steel bodies. Select Metric or G thread and check the exact body dimensions. The three M12 × 1.5 versions differ in thread length and overall length.

The values in L/min/cm² describe membrane air permeability at 70 mbar, not the total airflow through an assembled vent. Request per-vent airflow for sizing. For G-thread versions, confirm the thread dimensions from the selected model drawing.

Nickel-Plated Brass Breather Vents

Nickel-plated brass bodies with Metric threads. Check the pitch as well as the nominal size: M10 and M12 are available with different pitches.

M20 × 1.5 Nickel-Plated Brass 10 20 19 ≥ 1.2 L/min/cm² @ 70mbar 22

Membrane air permeability is expressed per unit area. It cannot be compared directly with the plastic table’s per-vent airflow. Confirm the required airflow and sealing-ring specification with the quotation.

FAQs

How do I select a PA66 plastic breather vent?
Match the thread size and pitch, then compare the per-vent airflow at 70 mbar, thread length, total length and wrench size. Include enclosure volume, temperature changes and exposure conditions in your RFQ so the vent selection can be reviewed.
Does 70 mbar indicate the working pressure?
No. The plastic table lists airflow measured at a differential pressure of 70 mbar (7 kPa). This is different from the stated hydrostatic resistance of greater than 100 mbar for 30 minutes. Confirm the required ingress-protection test conditions for the selected model before ordering.
Will a breather vent eliminate condensation?
A breathable vent helps equalize pressure and can reduce condensation risk, but it does not guarantee that the enclosure stays dry. Humidity, temperature changes, enclosure sealing and vent placement all affect the result. Keep the airflow path clear.
Why are there two M12 × 1.5 plastic vents?
The two versions share the same thread designation but differ in total length and wrench size: 16 mm / 16 mm and 18 mm / 17 mm respectively. Specify the required dimensions or attach a drawing. The PA66 plastic range shown runs from M5 to M40; refer to the separate tables for metal versions.

Breather Vent Selection and Ordering

For each item, specify body material, thread size and pitch, quantity, enclosure wall thickness and required airflow at a stated pressure difference. For PA66 vents, add black or white-grey. Where several versions share a thread size, include thread length, overall length and wrench size or attach a drawing.

Describe the enclosure volume, temperature changes and water or dust exposure. Confirm the sealing-ring material, retaining nut supply, installation torque and applicable ingress-protection test documentation with the quotation. The dimensional drawings above identify example versions; they are not certification reports.

Breather Vent Installation

  1. Confirm the mounting arrangement. Match the selected vent to a tapped opening or a clearance hole with an appropriate retaining nut. Obtain the model drawing before machining.
  2. Prepare the sealing surface. Remove burrs and debris. Check that the seal seats against a clean, flat surface and that the wall thickness suits the available thread length.
  3. Install without obstructing the vent. Use the specified tightening torque. Keep the membrane and air path clear of paint, adhesive and debris.
  4. Check the complete enclosure. Verify sealing and pressure-equalization performance under the intended operating conditions. A vent does not replace enclosure sealing or moisture management.
