Cable Gland Replacement: Will the New Gland Fit Your Enclosure?

Table of Contents

Before ordering a cable gland replacement, check the entry thread, finished panel opening, available thread length and installation space. The new gland must also suit the cable outside diameter and required sealing configuration. A matching thread designation alone does not confirm that the complete assembly will fit.

These checks are particularly useful when changing suppliers or ordering for enclosures that have already been punched, threaded and coated.

Does the Replacement Have the Same Entry Thread?

Confirm the full thread specification on the existing gland and the proposed replacement. For metric threads, include the diameter and pitch, such as M20 × 1.5. For PG, NPT or G/BSP threads, confirm the exact designation and standard.

Similar outside diameters do not make different thread standards interchangeable. If the existing thread is unknown, send the supplier its markings and a dimensioned drawing or clear photographs. Our cable gland thread standards guide helps distinguish the main thread types.

Will It Fit the Existing Panel Opening?

First establish whether the entry is a threaded hole or an unthreaded through-hole.

  • Threaded hole: check that the thread standard, size and pitch match, and confirm suitable thread engagement using the replacement model’s drawing and installation instructions.
  • Through-hole: compare the finished opening with the recommended mounting hole for the exact replacement model. Confirm that the gland, entry seal and locknut suit the mounting arrangement.

Use the finished enclosure dimensions, including any coating, rather than relying only on the original panel drawing. Check the opening for damage or distortion and confirm that the specified seal has a suitable contact surface. Do not assume that a gland’s thread diameter is the recommended drilling diameter.

Is There Enough Thread Length and Installation Space?

Glands with the same entry thread can have different body dimensions, thread lengths and locknut sizes. Check the following against the existing enclosure:

Check What to confirm
Panel thickness The actual thickness at the entry, including the finished mounting arrangement.
Entry thread length For a through-hole, enough length for the panel, specified sealing parts and correct locknut engagement. For a threaded hole, suitable engagement according to the model’s instructions.
Body and locknut dimensions Clearance from nearby glands, enclosure bends and internal components.
Tool access Room to hold the gland body and tighten the required nuts with the specified tools.
Cable fit and sealing The actual cable outside diameter falls within the replacement’s clamping range, and the specified sealing configuration suits the application.

Check the cable outside diameter, rather than selecting by conductor cross-section alone. Confirm the required locknuts and sealing washers separately; their functions and fit are part of the installation check.

What Should You Send the Supplier Before Ordering?

Provide the existing gland model or markings, its drawing if available, and photographs showing both sides of the entry. Include:

  • Thread standard, size and pitch where applicable.
  • Threaded entry or through-hole, finished hole diameter and any specified tolerance.
  • Panel thickness, coating and any limits on space around or behind the opening.
  • Cable outside diameter, required IP rating and relevant environmental conditions.
  • Required accessories and order quantity.

Ask for the drawing of the exact model being quoted, including mounting dimensions and supplied accessories. If a dimension is unknown, identify it as unknown so it can be checked before the replacement is confirmed.

Should You Test a Sample Before a Bulk Replacement Order?

For a bulk replacement order, test a sample on a finished enclosure using the intended cable and accessories. Check seating, thread engagement, tightening access and clearance from nearby parts.

A successful fit check does not by itself verify an IP rating. Confirm the required protection against the applicable product documentation and installation conditions.

Record the approved model, drawing reference and accessory set in the purchase specification. Need help checking a replacement? Send your existing gland and panel details so we can review the mounting configuration before quoting.
